Asus ZenFone 5

And the Asus launched its ZenFone series with a bang, challenging the supremacy of #MotoG and other smartphones in the same specification category.

Speculations were that the ZenFone 5 would be in the price bracket of Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000. But Asus chose the price wisely to give hard time to its rivals in the same price category, and I would say it looks much better than the phones that are little costlier then it.

Also the company claimed that people prefer Asus over iPhone and Samsung in Taiwan.

Lets have a look at what ZenFone 5 has to offer us.

The design is subtle, with a small portion of concentric rings of aluminium brushing at the bottom.

The phone feels sturdy and tall with 148.2mm height, 72.8mm width and 10.34mm thickness.
It sports a 5-inch display and is really awesome when it comes to display performance. It has a 2MP camera and notification at the top right corner above the screen.

The 8MP camera with LED flash is centered at the back with speakers at the bottom. Back panel features a soft-touch material that can be replaced by swappable cover.
Volume control and power buttons which BTW looks metallic are in a sequence on the right edge of the phone. Audio jack is at the top and the Micro-USB is provided at the bottom.
It is available in 5 colors in India: Sky Blue, Cherry Red, Pearl White, Charcoal Black and Solar Yellow.

Specification & OS

The ZenFone 5 comes with a dual-core 1.6Ghz Intel Atom Z2560 processor with Hyper-Threading technology, which allows each core to execute two instructions at a time.

It has 2GB of RAM and comes in 8GB/16Gb + support upto GB microSD cards.

Connectivity includes GPS, Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth.

It is a dual sim device (GSM+GSM) that supports Micro-Sim, both with 3G connectivity though they are mutually exclusive. Only one 3G connection can remain active at a time. There is a 2110mAh non removable battery which we feel is really good for a handset in this segment.

It sports a 5-inch IPS HD (720*1280) screen with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for safety. Pixel Density is pretty good at 294ppi which makes text sharp and clear, though in comparison to Moto G

(326ppi) it lacks.

It comes with a bunch of new features which other smartphones are yet to think about.

It has Reading Mode for eBook lovers and Glove Mode which makes it easy to operate the device even while working with gloves. It has an app called Splendid which allows you to control the color temperature, saturation and hue of the display, like we had in our computer monitors.

Capacitive buttons at the bottom makes the screen look big and they are- Back, Home and Recent.

The beauty runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with Asus’s new ZenUI skin on top. However, Asus has promised that an update to Android 4.4 is round the corner.

The ZenUI allows you to customize onscreen elements, like the color theme and transparency. Most of the stock apps have been customized on the device.

The phone comes with a number of apps such as Omlet Chat, a free instant messaging app; What’s Next, which can manage and track apps; Do It Lare, a to-do list; Super Note, for taking notes; Zen Link (PC Link, Remote Link, Party Link and Share Link); Asus Webstorage, the company’s cloud storage app(5GB free for life).

The ZenFone 5 Sports an 8MP auto-focus primary cam with an f/2.0 aperture lens with LED flash and a 2MP secondary (I would say selfie-cam). It also does a good job with video and captures a decent 1080p.
And here is something which makes photography using ZenFone totally different from the other smartphones and they call it PixelMaster.
PixelMaster is an Asus developed technology that combines software, hardware and optical design which helps you capture better picture. The company claims that the users can capture professional high quality pictures with their smartphone.

I must say engineers in Asus have really put there mind together to give user the experience which they never had before.

Main Highlights of PixelMaster

This is something new to the smartphones. We were stunned by the result of testing we did in different low-light environment.
You might be wondering how ZenFone does this. Here is the answer. When the camera is set to low-light mode, PixelMaster increases the light sensitivity by 400%, boosts color contrast by 200% and enhances noise reduction through a combination of adjusting pixel size and image-processing algorithms.

Time Rewind

This captures a sequence of burst shots 2 sec before and the second after user touches the shutter button. It gives user a total of 31 shots and lets them slide the time cycle to get the best picture. Well, this actually ensures that you don’t miss the moment you want to capture.

Selfie Mode

And your so called Taking Selfie using primary camera is solved.

This is how it works.

PixelMaster’s facial recognition software detects the present number of faces with in the frame, counts down and there you go, automatically takes a burst of 3 pictures to capture  the best moment.

GIF Animation

Ha Ha, GIF using smartphones camera..??

Did you even think about it?? Well, I did and look Asus did it.

The user needs to touch the shutter and hold it to capture a series of continuous pictures which is automatically converted into an animated GIF.

The lens is the outcome of an integration of 5 brightness-enhancing lenses for improves optical performance and distortion-free photos.

If you are looking for a smartphone with some serious multitasking or productivity in low price range, then ZenFone 5 is your baby. Playing games like Asphalt 8 and Dead Trigger 2 I didn’t notice any lag issue.
Both earpiece and speakerphone has pretty clear and loud voice.

Battery performs approx. 8-9 hours while browsing web and phone calls with normal notifications on, including instant messaging apps like WhatsApp, BBM, Facebook etc along with some casual photography and 3G turned on throughout.
Though, if used carefully it can last up to 10-11 hours.
